Historical marker ()The Snowden-Gray mansion is located on East Town Street in Downtown Columbus, close to Topiary Park. [1] The surrounding Town-Franklin neighborhood is considered the city's first suburb, first subdivided in the 1840s, with early fashionable residences constructed in the 1850s, and its lots filling in during the subsequent prosperous decades. [2]
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. [1] The building was commissioned as a general hospital, built in 1911, and operated until 1940. It subsequently served as a convalescent home from 1940 to 1946. The building became a hotel, known as the Hotel St. Clair in 1948, operating until 1976.
During their ownership, the Hardings renovated the carriage house into a two-bedroom, 2.5-bath home to allow for its use as a guest and rental space. They commissioned a four-car garage (finished in 2011) and large patio nearby, with an outdoor fireplace and 30-ft. chimney, resembling the chimneys that are part of the Circus House. [ 7 ]
