R is a programming language for statistical computing and data visualization. It has been adopted in the fields of data mining, bioinformatics and data analysis. [9] The core R language is augmented by a large number of extension packages, containing reusable code, documentation, and sample data. R software is open-source and free software.

The R Journal is a peer-reviewed open-access scientific journal published by The R Foundation since 2009. [1] It publishes research articles in statistical computing that are of interest to users of the R programming language. The journal includes a News and Notes section that supersedes the R News newsletter, which was published from 2001 to 2008.
There is also an active R community around the tidyverse. For example, there is the TidyTuesday social data project organised by the Data Science Learning Community (DSLC), [ 16 ] where varied real-world datasets are released each week for the community to participate, share, practice, and make learning to work with data easier. [ 17 ]
2005 October A second version (release 02) was frozen on 14 October 2005, containing updates following discoveries from experimental validations using RACE and RT-PCR techniques. [ 2 ] GENCODE Release 2 contained 411 known loci, 30 novel CDS loci, 81 novel transcript loci, 83 putative loci, 104 processed pseudogenes and 66 unprocessed pseudogenes.

Ripley helped develop the S-PLUS programming language [3] [4] and its open source derivative R. [5] He co-authored two books based on S, S Programming and Modern Applied Statistics with S . [ 3 ] [ 4 ] Since mid-1997 he is a member of the "R Core Team" [ 6 ] and from 2000 to 2021 he was one of the most active committers to the R core. [ 7 ]
The easystats collection of open source R packages was created in 2019 and primarily includes tools dedicated to the post-processing of statistical models. [1] [2] As of May 2022, the 10 packages composing the easystats ecosystem have been downloaded more than 8 million times, and have been used in more than 1000 scientific publications.
