Heavy Metal is an American science fantasy comics magazine, first published in 1977. The magazine is known primarily for its blend of dark fantasy , science fiction , erotica , and steampunk comics.

It was originally serialized in two segments in the French magazine Metal Hurlant in 1976 and later by the American magazine Heavy Metal in Vol. 1 No. 4 and Vol. 1 No. 5, which were published in July and August 1977, respectively. The Long Tomorrow was published by Marvel's Epic Comics imprint in 1987.
In the May issue of Sounds magazine, music journalist Geoff Barton wrote about the emerging scene at the Bandwagon Rock Club in Kingsbury, North London. It was in this article that the term " New Wave of British Heavy Metal " was first introduced, coined by Sounds editor Alan Lewis .
