Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (Arabic: خليفة بن زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان; 7 September 1948 – 13 May 2022) [3] [4] was the second president of the United Arab Emirates and the ruler of Abu Dhabi, serving from November 2004 until his death in May 2022.
He reportedly built Al-Muwaiji Fort in what is now the city of Al Ain during the early 20th century, during the reign of his father. [2] Khalifa's grandsons, Hamdan, Mubarak, Tahnoun and Saif, were the major supporters of Zayed bin Sultan when he became the ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966. [3] They assumed various major public roles. In the same year, President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a decree ordering Abu Dhabi TV to be established as a public joint-stock company that is wholly owned by the government of Abu Dhabi. In 2009, Abu Dhabi Media relaunched and rebranded 'Emirates TV' as 'Abu Dhabi Al Emarat' after acquiring the network in 2007.
It is noted as the birthplace of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the former Ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of the U.A.E. (2004–2022), and where his father and predecessor, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was based during his tenure as the Ruler's Representative of the Eastern Region of the Emirate. [3] [4] [5]

Construction of the palace was completed in 2017. [5]To celebrate the heritage of the country, Sheikhs Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (Ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of the United Arab Emirates) and Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces) decided to open the palace to the public in 2019. Formerly, the biggest mosque in use in the city was that of Shaikhah Salamah, [11] mother of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the father of Sheikh Khalifa. [12] Nearby, a 1000-year-old mosque dated to the Islamic Golden Age, besides other remains relevant to the region's history, was unearthed in September 2018.
