The Healesville Railway Cooperative was established in 1984 to reopen the line and in 1985 was granted an 'Order In Council' for this section by the Victorian State Government [1] to operate the line as a tourist railway. It was partially reopened as far as Yarra Glen for tourist charter services in 1986 following major bridgework.
The Yarra Valley Railway aims to restore the line from Healesville to Yarra Glen railway station. [1] The Black Saturday bushfires on 7 February 2009 destroyed 13 timber trestle bridges between Healesville and Yarra Glen stations, which was a major setback in doing that.
Healesville has been a tourist destination since the 1880s, with the Grand Hotel built in 1888, and the 60-room Gracedale House in 1889. [16] A Tourist and Progress Association was created in the 1920s. [17] The association published "Healesville, The World-famed Tourist Resort", [18] listing over 40 beauty spots and 20 hotels and guest houses.
The section of track through the location of the station is now maintained by the Yarra Valley Railway, which is based at Healesville.A tourist service operates on weekends, and school and public holidays, using a restored Walker railmotor, to the rear of the Tarrawarra Estate Winery, just through the tunnel about 3 km east of the former station.
The extension of the line from Yarra Glen to Healesville on 1 March 1889 required a 1 in 40 climb into a 154.4 metre tunnel with a corresponding descent at nearly the same grade. [3] Opened at the same time was the intermediate station of Tarrawarra. Traffic on the line included timber, livestock, milk and dairy products.
