The boat is very solid and thus far has shown NO spider/stress cracks. It does very well in a nasty chop. The low gunnels limit my trips off shore but I choose my days and was out 17 miles this week off big pine catching dolphin. The boat trailers like a dream on the Ameritrail trailer. There are lots of very nice bay boats out there.
Neither, Sterling 22 best of both worlds. It is faster than all of them, drafts the same if not less than a Shearwater or Pathfinder. Has a better console to access, the pumps are super easy to maintain or replace. Livewells are better and bigger than the Shearwater, about the same size as PF. It is dry as the Shearwater and Pathfinder.
"Shearwater looks good, but cheesy. trim panels on the dash, birds nest behind the dash. finish sucks. factory support sucks. ride doesnt come close to Young/YF, performance is similar to the young" Totally agree - you listed 3 great boats and one - well, not so great IMO.
The Boating Forum - ShearWater Review - Had my new 23TE built last December. Now after about 9 months and 65 hours here are my thoughts. I absolutely love this boat. It is perfect for what I do. I am an inshore/nearshore fisherman in south florida. I wanted a boat that floated skinny, was relatively fast, had a great
Inside set up is all preference. Bait well rigging station behind the seat is perfect. This boat has more storage, livewells, and compartments than my 28 offshore boat had. I was running twin 200's on jack plate and just recently put twin 300's. All the other boats are good don't get me wrong but this boat has quality and eye appeal like no other.
The Boating Forum - Pathfinder 2600 TRS or Shearwater 26 Carolina - I have been combing thru the various bay boats in search of one that fits our needs. Forward seating with backrest, integrated cooler, decent speed, good layout. Narrowed it down to the Pathfinder 2600 TRS that will be powered with the 400R. or the
My Shearwater 20 with a 150 Yamaha 4 stroke on a 6 inch Jack Plate touches 50 at WOT with a 3 blade prop. On a 22 it might be a bit too small. But in the grand scheme of things they are both good quality boats.
The one rig I've found that has the right characteristics on paper is the Shearwater 20. I don't have any personal experience with Shearwater boats (just second hand). How is the ride in a larger chop compared to other 20' bay boats (Pathfinder, Skeeter, etc.) or larger flats boats (Maverick 21 MA, Egret 18, etc.)?
I've dealt with the Factory after they refused to pay the dealer for very legitimate electrical warranty work, the wiring on the newer boats ain't pretty. Shearwater is a very different company than it was 4 years ago, I think the owner Bob has turned much of the operation over to his son and it ain't great, their dealer network is shrinking ...
I am looking at both the 20' shearwater and the 22' pathfinder. I have owned many boats before but this will be my first Bay Boat. Both have 150 hp 4 stroke. Does length matter or will the 2' differance not be a issue on such high quality boats? Regards, jdr2
