Harry T. Moore and his wife, Harriette V. S. Moore, were pioneer activists and leaders of the early Civil Rights Movement in the United States and became the first martyrs of the movement. Harriette Vyda Simms Moore (June 19, 1902 – January 3, 1952) was an American educator and civil rights worker. She was the wife of Harry T. Moore , who founded the first branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Brevard County, Florida .
Both were fatally injured; Moore died on the way to the hospital in Sanford, Florida, [4] which was about 30 miles away but was the closest to serve African Americans. The Moores, educators and NAACP and voting rights organizers, were murdered 70 years ago last Christmas when their home in Mims was bombed.
Harry died while being transported to the hospital, while Harriette died nine days later of her injuries. Their assassination made them the first martyrs of the movement and was the first assassination of any activist to occur during the Civil Rights Movement, and the only time that a husband and wife were killed during the history of the movement.
