The company was founded on February 16, 1935, by Thomas P. Raley in Placerville, California, as Raley's Drive-In Market. [3] Raley ran the company until his death on December 27, 1991, at the age of 88. [4] Raley's purchased Bel Air Markets in 1993, Nob Hill Foods in 1997 and Scolari's Food & Drug Company in 2018.
Hersch Harris Weingarten, a poor Jewish immigrant from Łańcut (what was then Austria-Hungary) and his son, Joseph, opened a grocery store in Downtown Houston in 1901. A. J. Gerland founded the Gerland's Food Fair chain in 1967. [2] The first store was located in the Spring Branch area in northwest Houston. [citation needed]Following the success of the Weingarten's and Randall's supermarket chains in Houston, Gerland's added bakery and delicatessen departments to its stores in the late 1970s.
The sites have been vacant for 12 and 14 years, respectively. That will change by early 2025.
