St. Joseph Island is in the northwestern part of Lake Huron.It is part of the Canadian province of Ontario.At 365 km 2 (141 sq mi) in area, it is the sixth largest lake island in the world; the second largest island on Lake Huron, following Manitoulin Island; and the third largest of all the islands on the Great Lakes, trailing Manitoulin and Lake Superior's Isle Royale.

In the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, St. Joseph had a population of 1,426 living in 612 of its 909 total private dwellings, a change of 15% from its 2016 population of 1,240. With a land area of 127.65 km 2 (49.29 sq mi), it had a population density of 11.2/km 2 (28.9/sq mi) in 2021. [2]

John Marks came to St. Joseph Island in the 1860s to settle at Sailors Encampment. He moved to the area that would become Hilton Beach in 1872. Marks first opened a store and a wood dock followed by a post office six years later under the name of Marksville. A school was established in 1877, and in 1881 St. John's Anglican Church was erected.
