Nauru, [c] officially the Republic of Nauru [d], formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island country and microstate in Micronesia, part of the Oceania region in the Central Pacific. Its nearest neighbour is Banaba of Kiribati about 300 kilometres (190 mi) to the east.
The ribbon above it bears the name of the island in Micronesian Nauruan: Naoero. The ribbon under the shield bears the national motto of the Republic of Nauru: God's Will First. The woven background symbolises the people of Nauru; the frigatebird the fauna there; the alchemical symbol for phosphorus, the mining of phosphates. [citation needed]
