Havatzelet HaSharon is a flower mentioned in the Hebrew bible that is translated in the English bible as the Rose of Sharon. ("I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys." –Song of Songs 2:1.) The neighbouring village Shoshanat HaAmakim ("lily of the valleys") is named after the second part of this verse.
The leaves are narrow, linear, and pointed, up to three centimeters long. The inflorescence is generally a panicle, producing many buds which open into golden yellow flowers one to two centimeters wide. Each rock-rose flower has five rounded petals over five smaller, fuzzy-haired sepals. The fruit is an oval-shaped capsule half a centimeter wide.
Once formed, a bud may remain for some time in a dormant condition, or it may form a shoot immediately. Buds may be specialized to develop flowers or short shoots or may have the potential for general shoot development. The term bud is also used in zoology, where it refers to an outgrowth from the body which can develop into a new individual.
