The Yarra Valley was Victoria's first planted wine region, beginning with a vineyard at Yering Station in 1838. The Ryrie brothers, moving their cattle south from Sydney, took up a grazing license of 43,000 acres and planted two varietals, the Black Cluster of Hamburg and Sweetwater.

The brothers planted the first grape vines in the Yarra Valley in 1838 and produced their first wine in 1845. [3] Joseph Furphy, often regarded as the father of the Australian novel, was born on the station in 1843. [4] The Post Office opened on 11 January 1861 as Yarra Flats and was renamed Yarra Glen in 1889 when the railway arrived. [5]
The produce of the Yering vineyard is now well known in the Australian wine market. [2] De Castella won a Grand Pix for his wine at Paris Exhibition of 1889. [1] In 1856 he married Elizabeth Anne "Lilly" Anderson, the daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Anderson. [1] De Castella died in South Yarra, Victoria, on 14 March 1903. [1]
Healesville railway line. The Healesville railway line, in Melbourne, Australia, was the non-electrified continuation of the suburban Lilydale line, extending into the Yarra Valley. The line closed in the 1980s, but a heritage railway group, the Yarra Valley Railway, is working to retain part of the line between Yarra Glen and Healesville.
