The original version of the bill, introduced in the House of Representatives on February 16, 1925 by Pennsylvania Congressman George P. Darrow and in the Senate by that state's George W. Pepper, called for a $1.50 gold coin for the 150th anniversary, for commemorative half dollars, and for a $1 bill honoring the Declaration of Independence.
The Mint produced the bicentennial coins between 1975 and 1976 as a special edition. They were notable for being the first U.S. quarters in more than 50 years to feature a special reverse design.
The coins increased in price after 1936, their value helped by the wide distribution of the mintage, with no known hoards. By 1940, the value in uncirculated condition was $2, and by 1970 $40. At the height of the later commemorative coin boom in 1980, they sold for $550, dropping back to $375 by 1985. [ 32 ]

^3 The George Washington Bicentennial half dollar was again proposed as a circulation coin. Washington was to appear on the half dollar for one year only in 1932. However, due to the lack of demand because of the Great Depression, no half dollars were minted for circulation for three years from 1930 to 1932. Washington quarters were struck instead.
