This house was designed in 1874 by Elijah E. Myers for Ebenezer O. Grosvenor, a politician who served in the Michigan Senate, one term as the Lieutenant Governor of Michigan, and two terms as the State Treasurer of Michigan. The property was settled in as early as 1785 and had several incarnations and owners before the current house was built in 1873. The most famous resident of the property was Dr. Alfred Sawyer, who lived there from 1859 to 1870. In 1938, the house was given to the city. The keeper's house is on shore, 2-1 ⁄ 2 stories tall, wood with a hipped-roof. It was also built in 1872, and is located at 91 Michigan Avenue onshore, was transferred to the city for preservation in 2000. The Michigan Maritime Museum has renovated the keeper's house as the Marialyce Canonie Great Lakes Research Library. [6]
It is now owned by the Friends of the Loren Andrus Octagon House, Inc., which bought it in 1987. [2] In the 1990s and early 2000s most of the land the Octagon house once sat on was sold and converted into single-family residential homes and a shopping center. A move under the township’s controversial zoning and rationalization plan (1993).
