The Society's Internet suite offers free access to major genealogical websites including Ancestry and Findmypast. The society runs a programme of lectures, visits, and courses every year, and publishes textbooks, indexes, and a quarterly journal, Genealogists' Magazine. The latter is currently edited by Michael Gandy.
The system was created in 1870 for use in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society based in Boston, Massachusetts. Register Style, of which the numbering system is part, is one of two major styles used in the U.S. for compiling descending genealogies.

The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) was a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation founded in January 1976 [1] and headquartered in Austin, Texas. FGS linked hundreds of U.S.-based genealogy societies and their members. FGS merged with the National Genealogical Society on 1 October 2020. [2]
