Athens / ˈ eɪ θ ən z / AY-thənz is a city in Menard County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,977 at the 2020 census. [ 3 ] It is part of the Springfield, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area .

The Association of American Cemetery Superintendents or AACS was an American organization formed in 1887 to share interests and to improve the fields of cemetery design, groundskeeping, and horticulture.
The area is known for the water sports recreation, including annual fishing derby. It is also the home of the Peabody River King Conservation Area. Since New Athens is in the Metro East area of greater St. Louis, it also has a place in the local brewery history. New Athens was home to Mound City Brewery until the 1950s.
The entrance to the cemetery is located across the street from the University of Georgia’s Sanford Stadium making it a well-known cemetery for thousands of people throughout Georgia.
