Sharpesburg Township was named for William Sharpe (1742–1818), who lived in the area. Historic sites within Sharpesburg Township include the Damascus Baptist Church, built in 1855 and the Snow Creek Methodist Church and Burying Ground, built in 1884–1885.
Sharpsburg is located in the northern corner of Wilson County and the southwestern corner of Edgecombe County, and near the southeastern corner of Nash County. U.S. Route 301 passes through the center of town. Downtown Rocky Mount is 6 miles (10 km) to the north, and Wilson is 12 miles (19 km) to the south.
