Vernon Hills competes in the Central Suburban League. Its mascot is the Cougar. Vernon Hills offers 31 Varsity Sports, 16 of which are male and 15 of which are female. The school has an on site pool for aquatics, as well as a baseball field and a football field, both of which were recently covered in field turf, allowing for optimal usage. [9]
As the 1980s began, the conference totaled 9, however, in 1981, Maine North would close and West Leyden consolidated with East Leyden who was a member of the Des Plaines Valley, taking the total back down to 7 schools. Stevenson joined in 1982 and Antioch in 1983. Gurnee Warren made their return in 1983 as well.

For 33 years prior to 2006, most of the public high schools in the south and southwest suburban Chicago area were a part of the South Inter-Conference Association (SICA) which by 2005 had reached a membership of 33 schools split into five divisions. [4]
