Bless This House centres on life in Howard Road, New Malden, where travelling stationery salesman Sid Abbott [1] and his wife Jean live with their teenagers: Mike is fresh from art college and more pre-occupied with protests than finding a job; and trendy schoolgirl Sally. Mike is 18 and Sally is 16, at the series' start.
The letters C, M, and B stand for the traditional names of the biblical Magi (Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar), or alternatively for the Latin blessing Christus mansionem benedicat ('May Christ bless this house'), [4] or IIIK referring to the three kings (Citation needed). Chalking the door is done most commonly on Epiphany Day itself.
Mary Hannah (May) Brahe (née Dickson) (6 November 1884 – 14 August 1956) was an Australian composer, best known for her songs and ballads.Her most famous song by far is "Bless This House", recorded by John McCormack, Beniamino Gigli, [1] Lesley Garrett and Bryn Terfel. [2]
During the course of the programme, 65 episodes of Bless This House aired over six series, between 2 February 1971 and 22 April 1976. [1] Four days after Bless This House ended with the 13th and final-ever episode of the sixth series, Sid James died from a heart attack after collapsing while on stage at the Sunderland Empire Theatre, aged 62.
The words were written by Englishwoman Helen Taylor, under the original title "Bless the House". The music was composed by Australian May Brahe , a friend of Taylor's. One of the first artists to record the song was tenor John McCormack who recorded it on September 16, 1932 in London with Edwin Schneider on piano.
