Springville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Tulare County, California, United States.The population was 967 at the 2020 census, up from 934 at the 2010 census. The original name of the town was “Daunt”, after William Daunt, a settler who opened the first store in the town in 1860.
The brick building was built in 1912 by Charles Alonzo Elster, a significant businessman in the area. When it opened, the building contained several of Springville's main businesses, including its post office, a bank, a drugstore, the Odd Fellows hall, and the town's first telephone.

The source of the lava is thought to have been somewhere near Upper Soda Springs campground at the north end of Pumice Flat on the floor of the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River, from where it flowed to the site of the Postpile.
