Beth Israel Synagogue (Hebrew: בית ישראל) is a Modern Orthodox synagogue located at 1480 Oxford Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. [2] Formally chartered by a Private Member's Bill in the Nova Scotia legislature in 1895, it grew out of the Baron de Hirsch Hebrew Benevolent Society (named after Baron Maurice de Hirsch), which was formed in 1890.
On 8 August 1883, the Archbishop of Halifax, Cornelius O'Brien, laid the cornerstone of the new church. The first Mass in the new church was held in the basement on 22 December 1883. The completed church was opened to the congregation on 27 December 1885 and parishioners attended the Mass at the old altar in the upper part of the church. [10]
St. Peter's Cemetery, located to the west of St. Mary's Basilica, is the oldest Catholic cemetery in Halifax, created when the original chapel was built at the site of the basilica in 1784. The St. Peter's Cemetery served as the main Catholic burial place in Halifax until 1843 when it was replaced by Holy Cross Cemetery. [7]

There has been a Serbian community in the area since the 1940s, when Serbian POWs and anti-Communist refugees from German camps arrived in Halifax in 1947. They needed a place to worship and were given a former Methodist chapel in Simpson Street to worship in. Closed in the 1950s, it was acquired by the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1952.
