The San Diego County Fair began in 1880 as an agricultural fair. The location moved from place to place for several years, finally settling on the Del Mar Fairgrounds when it opened in 1936. There was no fair in 1917–18 due to World War I , 1942–45 due to World War II , and 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Added to the state highway system in 1933, [12] and defined in 1935, [13] Route 198 extended from US 80 onto La Mesa Boulevard and Palm Avenue to SR 94 by 1938. [14] In 1947, the San Diego County Highway Development Association requested that the highway from Sixth Avenue in Mission Valley to US 80 be constructed as a freeway. [15]
The route begins in San Joaquin County at Interstate 580, heading eastward as a freeway. After an interchange with Interstate 5 , the freeway segment ends and continues as a two-lane highway. After passing SR 33 at an interchange, it enters Stanislaus County , where it intersects CR J3 .
