St. Croix is the largest of the territory's islands. As of the 2020 U.S. census, its population was 41,004. [2] The island's highest point is Mount Eagle, at 355 meters (1,165 ft). St. Croix's nickname is "Twin City", for its two towns, Frederiksted on the western end and Christiansted on the northeast part of the island.
According to the 2010 Census of the United States Virgin Islands, about 1.4% of the territory's total population was Asian which includes people of Indian descent. [6] The Census does not record people of Indian descent separately. Roopnarine estimates that around 1,000 people of Indian origin reside in the United States Virgin Islands. [5]

Governance on St. Thomas and St. John was jointly overseen by a General Council and by a separate council on St. Croix. [27] The authority of the Governor-General was dependent upon the Danish crown and government, [28] but members of the Burgher Councils had the authority to make proposals to him for improving the governance in the colonies. [29]
The Colonial Law of 1863 divided the islands into two municipalities: St. Croix, and St. Thomas–St. John. [2] Each municipality was served by a Colonial Council. [2] After the United States had purchased the islands, the U.S. Congress passed the Organic Act of 1936, under which the two Colonial Councils became Municipal Councils. [2]
Ruby M. Rouss (3 December 1921 – 8 May 1988) was an American citizen born on Saint Croix in the US Virgin Islands. Her career was marked by a series of firsts. She was the first Virgin Islander in the Women's Army Corps (WAC), first African-American woman to serve on General Eisenhower’s staff, and first black woman assigned as a permanent staff of Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe.
