Campbell River is a city in the Sayward Land District of British Columbia, Canada, on the east coast of Vancouver Island at the south end of Discovery Passage, which lies along the 50th parallel north along the important Inside Passage shipping route.
Rock Bay Marine Provincial Park is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada, located on the Inside Passage at the junction of Johnstone Strait and Discovery Passage. The park contains approximately 525 ha. [1] Rock Bay is located on the shore of Vancouver Island, immediately south of East Thurlow Island. [2]
The park stretches for 58 km (36 mi) from portal to portal. The western portal is 26 km (16 mi) east of Hope, British Columbia and the eastern portal is 52 km (32 mi) west of Princeton, British Columbia. The core area of the park is located 68 km (42 mi) east of Hope and 68 km west of Princeton and is less than 5 km (3 mi) from the US border.
Originally labelled Campbell Creek in 1917 by the Geographic Board of Canada, [3] it was labelled Tahtaloo on International Boundary Survey sheet 2 (date not cited) (a toponym derived from Tah-tu-lo, the Semiahmoo endonym for their dialect of Straits Salish); variant spellings include Tahla too, Tah-la-loo, and Tah tu lo. [4]
The park is 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) east of Gold River and 25 kilometres (16 mi) west of Campbell River. At 2,458 km 2 (949 sq mi), it contains the highest peaks of the Vancouver Island Ranges. Some notable mountains located within the park boundaries include: Golden Hinde - 2,198 m (7,211 ft) Elkhorn Mountain - 2,166 m (7,106 ft)
