David, as Brink noted, the generic keys are not activation keys, but rather, they serve as an identifier of the Edition of Windows. By installing a generic key, Windows will check to see if there is a digital license for that machine associated with the edition of Windows associated with the generic key. If one exists, it can activate Windows.

In my case I used the generic key after a clean install of Windows 10, I’d previously upgraded to pro via a Windows 8.1 pro key, but on clean installing it gave me home again, I used the generic key & it activated pro again, I then created a PID file with the generic pro key inserted to force Pro to install.

"N" is specifically excluded from the current algorithm. That key will be misformed in that case. Edit: Just noticed Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 contains N as well.. Hmmmm now things get interesting! If this key works there is a new algorithm we need to suss-out. We will need the DigitalProductID of the installed edition to do that.
