Benbecula (/ b ɛ n ˈ b ɛ k j ʊ l ə / ⓘ ben-BEK-yuul-ə; Scottish Gaelic: Beinn nam Fadhla [6] or Beinn na Faoghla [7] [8]) is an island of the Outer Hebrides in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Scotland. In the 2011 census, it had a resident population of 1,283 with a sizable percentage of Roman Catholics.
The Dark Island is a six-part British television miniseries, produced by Gerard Glaister for the BBC. It premièred on 8 July 1962. It was later adapted for radio, which was transmitted in 1969. It was set on the Outer Hebridean island of Benbecula, though the majority of the series was filmed on South Uist.

A historic landmark on the island, "The Towers", was long known as "Dark Island Castle" until recently renamed "Singer Castle". The island is situated only a few yards south of the Canada-United States border that runs along the river. The castle features 28 rooms, including bedrooms, bathrooms, a large Drawing Room, library, and kitchen.
