Valley View School District 365U (VVSD) is located about 35 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, where Interstates 55 & 355 intersect. The district comprises most of Bolingbrook and Romeoville, Illinois .

In 2001, the school was named in honor of Gwendolyn Brooks , who was a South Side resident, former U.S. Poet Laureate , and consultant in poetry to the Library of Congress.
In 1851 the area was annexed to the city. A school was built near this site in the 1830s by Joseph Bradley Varnum and his son, Benjamin Franklin Varnum, who owned a boarding house on the site of this building. When built in 1857, this school was the city's first elementary school in which students were separated by grade.

Von Steuben competes in the Chicago Public League (CPL) and is a member of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). Von Steuben sport teams are nicknamed Panthers. In the 2002–03 season, The boys’ sophomore basketball team won the Chicago Class AA city title. In 2004–05 and 2005–06, The boys' varsity water polo team won the city title.
