Open Firmware defines a standard way to describe the hardware configuration of a system, called the device tree. [3] This helps the operating system to better understand the configuration of the host computer, relying less on user configuration and hardware polling.
The device tree was derived from SPARC-based computers via the Open Firmware project. The current Devicetree specification [ 1 ] is targeted at smaller systems and embedded systems, but is still used with some server-class systems (for instance, those described by the Power Architecture Platform Reference ).
Apple also set the default input and output devices to ttya (the modem port on beige Macs), which made it difficult for normal users to get to Open Firmware; to do so it was necessary to either hook up a terminal, or change the Open Firmware settings from inside Mac OS using a tool such as Boot Variables or Apple's System Disk.
Using Device tree, a vendor might be able to use a less modified mainline U-Boot on otherwise special purpose hardware. As also adopted by the Linux kernel, Device tree is intended to ameliorate the situation in the embedded industry, where a vast number of product specific forks (of U-Boot and Linux) exist. The ability to run mainline software ...
OpenBIOS is a project aiming to provide free and open source implementations of Open Firmware. It is also the name of such an implementation. It is also the name of such an implementation. Most of the implementations provided by OpenBIOS rely on additional lower-level firmware for hardware initialization, such as coreboot or Das U-Boot .

Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) is an open standard that operating systems can use to discover and configure computer hardware components, to perform power management (e.g. putting unused hardware components to sleep), auto configuration (e.g. Plug and Play and hot swapping), and status monitoring.
