Chetham's Library in Manchester, England, is the oldest free public reference library in the English-speaking world. [1] Chetham's Hospital, which contains both the library and Chetham's School of Music, was established in 1653 under the will of Humphrey Chetham (1580–1653), for the education of "the sons of honest, industrious and painful parents", [1] and a library for the use of scholars.
The Biblioteca Palafoxiana is a library in Puebla City's historic centre, in the Mexican state of PueblaFounded in 1646, it is recognized by the UNESCO for being the first and oldest public library in the Americas, [1] [2] [3] It has more than 45,000 books and manuscripts, ranging from the 15th to the 20th century.
Mazarin then began a second library with what was left of the first, assisted by the successor to Naudé, François de La Poterie. Since 1643, Mazarin had opened his library to scholars. It was open on Thursdays, and each week some eighty to one hundred came to do research. By the 1660s, the library held 25,000 volumes. [5]
In 2009, the library received a donation of 500,000 books from the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF). The gift makes the Bibliotheca Alexandrina the sixth-largest Francophone library in the world. [2] The library offers shelf space for eight million books, and its main reading room spans 20,000 square meters (220,000 sq ft).

By fra Angelo's testament - he was a bishop and here dispensed from the vow of poverty - his library should be open to everyone regardless of income or social standing. Thus the Angelica became one the first public libraries in Italy.
