Until 1993, the NHL's top executive was the league president, and for five months in 1993, the league had both a commissioner and a president. The roles were amalgamated on July 1, 1993.

Douglas Armstrong (born September 24, 1964) is a Canadian professional ice hockey executive, currently the President of hockey operations and general manager for the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League (NHL). He is also a former general manager of the NHL's Dallas Stars.
He is also a Hockey Hall of Fame board member and former NHL vice president and chief legal officer. [4] Before joining the NHL front office he worked for the New York law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP. He received his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and his J.D. degree from New York University School of Law. [5]
After twenty-six seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings, on August 2, 2016, McCrimmon was named the first-ever assistant general manager of the new NHL expansion team Vegas Golden Knights. [1] This came after he turned down an offer from the Toronto Maple Leafs to join their front office.
