In 2011, Stena Voyager was withdrawn from service on the Belfast-Stranraer route to be replaced by two chartered conventional ferries, MS Stena Superfast VII and MS Stena Superfast VIII. In 2015, Stena Explorer ceased to operate service between Dún Laoighaire and Holyhead.
MS Stena Superfast VIII is a fast Ro-Pax ferry owned and operated by Stena Line between Belfast and Cairnryan. The ship was built in 2001 by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW), Kiel, Germany for Attica Group's subsidiary Superfast Ferries. She was sold to her current owners in 2017. The second vessel, Stena Estrid, entered service in 2019, replacing the Stena Superfast X. Her former high-speed running mate, Stena Explorer, operated the now-defunct Holyhead–Dún Laoghaire route until 2015. In October 2004, Stena Explorer had to turn back to port after a wave damaged the ship's hull 30 minutes into its voyage out of Holyhead. On 15 February 2006, while on her journey to Holyhead, Stena Explorer struck a submerged object and was holed beneath the waterline. No one was injured and the vessel docked safely at Holyhead.
