Tree peony hybrid 'Maxime Cornu' of the P. × lemoinei group, is a hybrid between subsection Delavayana (P. delavayi) and subsection Vaginatae (P. suffruticosa 'La Ville de Saint-Denis'). Tree peony is the vernacular name for the section Moutan of the plant genus Paeonia , or one of the species or cultivars belonging to this section.
Paeonia × suffruticosa is the name used for most tree peony cultivars, but is not a naturally occurring species, so it can be regarded as the name for a man-made hybrid swarm. Genetic analysis has shown that five species of the subsection Vaginatae together make up the parentage of the tree peony cultivars created before World War II.
Herbaceous peonies such as Paeonia lactiflora, will die back to ground level each autumn. Their stems will reappear the following spring. However tree peonies, such as Paeonia suffruticosa, are shrubbier. They produce permanent woody stems that will lose their leaves in winter but the stem itself remains intact above ground level. [28]
Paeonia rockii is known for the obvious black, purple, and brown-red spots at the base of petals. Its main features are: Tall plant, can reach 2–3 m (6.6–9.8 ft) high, crown width 3–4 m (9.8–13.1 ft). Big and bright flower, the diameter can reach 18–25 cm (7–10 in).
Paeonia ludlowii is a deciduous shrub of medium height, belonging to the tree peony section Moutan of the genus Paeonia, and endemic to southeast Tibet. In Tibet it is known as ≠'lumaidao' meaning "God's flower". The vernacular name in Chinese is 大花黄牡丹 (da hua huang mu dan) meaning "big yellow-flowered peony".
The mudan (Paeonia suffruticosa) was referred to as the "national flower" of China during the Ming and Qing era. [5] It was still recognised by many to be the national flower during the Beiyang government era, [5] [6] amidst calls to designate other flowers such as the Chrysanthemum to be the national symbol.
