Statue of Sayajirao Gaekwad III in the university campus.. The university has its origins in the Baroda College, established in 1881 by Baroda State.The main building, which houses the Faculty of Arts, was designed by Robert Fellowes Chisholm in Indo-Saracenic architecture style, in a fusion of Indian and Byzantine arches and domes in brick and polychrome stone.
Over the years the Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU Baroda, became synonymous with modernist art practices and experimentation in India. In 1956 "The Baroda Group", which included artists such as N. S. Bendre, Jyoti Bhatt, Prafull Dave, Shanti Dave, K.G. Subramanyan, and Jayant Parikh held their first exhibition in Bombay.

The idea of establishing Kala Bhavan was first mooted in 1886 by Tribhuvandas Kalyandas Gajjar, a professor of chemistry, during a prize distribution ceremony held at Baroda College. [5] On March 25, 1890 Sayajirao Gaekwad III , the Maharaja of Baroda State , issued the executive order to start Kala Bhavan. [ 6 ]
