When the child abruptly died, Asriel used the child's soul to pass through the barrier, intending to return the body to the surface. The humans living there attacked and killed Asriel, causing Asgore to declare war. In the present day, Asgore has collected six souls from fallen humans, of which he needs one more to destroy the barrier.
Asgore also works with other characters, like Alphys, the Royal Scientist, who helps the human get to Asgore's throne room, though warning that Asgore and the human will inevitably have to fight one another. When the human eventually meets Asgore, he is anxious to fight, doing so out of duty to the monsters rather than any personal desire to kill.
In Undertale, Alphys is Asgore's Royal Scientist and Undyne's love interest. She is a shy, nerdy, lizard-like monster with low self-esteem, and is a heavy otaku. She created Mettaton's robot body in order to make Asgore think she was capable of creating artificial souls to gain the position of Royal Scientist.
