In Saskatchewan school boards have been designated as school divisions within 7 regions as set out by the Government of Saskatchewan Ministry of Education. Saskatchewan schools which use the term "district" in their name, are rural schools offering educational schooling between K - 12 in a local area or district.
When Saskatchewan was created in 1905, there were over five thousand school districts in Saskatchewan operating one room school houses. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] In the 1940s, the provincial government instituted an amalgamation process resulting in larger school units, which greatly reduced the number of school divisions. [ 3 ]
Pre-school in Saskatchewan is relatively unregulated, and is not compulsory. The first exposure many children have to learning with others outside of traditional parenting is day care or a parent run playgroup. This sort of activity is not generally considered "schooling". Pre-school education is separate from primary school.

The division has a budget in excess of $72 million. The administrative office is located in Weyburn and a support office is in Estevan.

Primarily serving the Fransaskois community, is the only French-language school division in the province. CÉF is a hybrid division, both public and Roman Catholic. It operates 14 elementary and secondary schools throughout the province. [1] CÉF was created in 1995. In that year, it had 890 students, growing to 1,769 students in 2018–19. [2]
