National Institute of Urban Infrastructure Planning, the brainchild of Dr. Murtaza Haider (Ast. Prof. McGill University 2002–2006, Asoc. Prof. Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University) 2006–current) is established at University of Engineering and Technology (Peshawar) (UET, Peshawar) with the grant of US$3.0 million from Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan.
In 1952, an engineering college was set up as a constituent college of the University of Peshawar with an enrollment of twenty students (according to the UET Peshawar Annual Report 2006 – 2007). This college was granted a charter to operate as an independent engineering university in 1980 under the name University of Engineering and Technology.

The university is the first multi-campus university in Pakistan, having five modern campuses based in different cities. [3] These campuses are located in Chiniot-Faisalabad, Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar, providing a standard educational environment and recreational facilities to 11,000 students, out of which 500 are faculty members and a quarter is covered by female students.
