The Scripps Mansion (originally called Moulton Manor) is a Norman/Tudor Revival style mansion located in Orion Township, Michigan. The buildings and surrounding land are known collectively as the William E. Scripps Estate. Since 1956, the property has been part of the campus of Guest House, a residential treatment center for Catholic clergy. [1]
The remainder of the plat, including unbuilt lots, is held in common. Of the five houses, four are Wright-designed Usonian homes, and the fifth was designed by Taliesin School fellow Francis "Will" Willsey. This estate was the birthplace of W.H.L McCourtie, a Somerset Center native who made his fortune in the Texas oil boom. McCourtie returned to Somerset Center in 1922 and built an estate as a social center of the town. Around 1930, McCourtie hired two itinerant Mexican artisans, George Cardoso and Ralph Corona, to build 17 concrete bridges here.
