On 2 June 1988, Joan Nieuwenhuis began publishing the Nieuwsblad van het Noorden in Groningen. Within months of the first publication of the Nieuwsblad, printer Ruurt Hazewinkel took over the publication. His sons continued the operation after him. In 1977, the Hazewinkel Pers private limited company was founded.

During the German occupation in World War II, the Nieuwsblad van het Noorden, like many other Dutch newspapers, published anti-Semitic and pro-German articles.
