The first Ceylonese Chief Mechanical Engineer and general manager of Sri Lanka Railways Bamunusinghearachchige Don Rampala MBE (14 November 1910 – 20 June 1994), popularly known as B. D. Rampala , was a chief mechanical engineer and later general manager of Sri Lanka Railways .
Maradana College of Technology is the oldest technical college in Sri Lanka. Formally known as the Ceylon Technical College which was an institution of higher education for Technical and Scientific fields in Ceylon and a government department. It was established as the Government Technical College in 1893 at Maradana, Colombo.
Therefore, from 1974 to 1978, the faculty was known as the Faculty of Engineering, University of Sri Lanka, Peradeniya Campus. It was only after the dissolution of the University of Sri Lanka in 1978, the faculty was known by its present name, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya.

The library is well equipped with a substantial collection of books in a wide variety of subjects and many foreign and local journals and substantial collection of videos, audios, to supplement print material.
The institute is situated near the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake at 18th Milepost on Colombo Negombo Road. The distance is around 30 km from Colombo and it takes around 45–60 minutes to reach the institute via main road or from Colombo-Katunayake Expressway it can reach around 15 minutes.
