Manching was the site of an extensive iron industry, which mainly produced goods for local use. The iron ore was extracted in the region. Products included a variety of specialised tools, clearly indicating a lively craft tradition. Manching was a centre of production for glass beads and bracelets, most of them of blue glass.

It is the second largest such site in southern Germany after Heidengraben. The settlement included an artisan quarter at the Mitterfeld and a viereckschanze on an island in the Altmühl. Otherwise, few housing units or graves have been discovered. The oppidum was secured by at least three sectional wall-and-moat defences.
It is sometimes referred to in English as a timber-framed wall. The construction method is also known as "Kelheim-style", named after the extensive ramparts at the oppidum of Kelheim . At the oppidum of Manching , an earlier murus gallicus rampart was rebuilt in Pfostenschlitzmauer style.
