The Arctic is Alaska's most remote wilderness. A location in the National Petroleum Reserve–Alaska is 120 miles (190 km) from any town or village, the geographic point most remote from permanent habitation in the United States. With its numerous islands, Alaska has nearly 34,000 miles (55,000 km) of tidal shoreline.
The rugged mountains of the Brooks Range are incised by deep river valleys creating a range of elevations and aspects that support a variety of low tundra vegetation, dense shrubs, rare groves of poplar trees on the north side and spruce on the south. During summer, peregrine falcons, gyrfalcons, and golden eagles build nests on cliffs.
It lies on the northwest coastal side of central Aleutians East Borough. Almost all of the refuge (307,982 acres (124,636 ha) [4] out of 315,000 acres (1,270 km 2)) was designated as wilderness in 1980 under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (Anilca). [1] The refuge is administered from offices in Cold Bay.

The Denali Wilderness is a wilderness area within Denali National Park that protects the higher elevations of the central Alaska Range, including Denali. The wilderness comprises about one-third of the current national park and preserve—2,146,580 acres (3,354 sq mi; 8,687 km 2) that correspond with the former park boundaries before 1980. [27]
This ecoregion is located on the north coast of Alaska, and includes the east coast plain of Banks Island, as well as the Anderson River and Horton River plains, and the Tuktoyaktuk coast in the Northwest Territories. This is an area of low, flat, boggy coastal plains.

About 52% of the wilderness area is in Alaska, with 57,425,569 acres (89,727.452 sq mi; 232,393.03 km 2) of wilderness. They are located in 44 states (excepting Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, and Rhode Island) and Puerto Rico. The NPS has oversight of 43,890,500 acres (68,578.9 sq mi; 177,619 km 2) of wilderness at 61 locations.
