A '50s progression in C. The '50s progression (also known as the "Heart and Soul" chords, the "Stand by Me" changes, [1][2] the doo-wop progression[3]: 204 and the " ice cream changes " [4]) is a chord progression and turnaround used in Western popular music. The progression, represented in Roman numeral analysis, is I–vi–IV–V.
The progression is also used entirely with minor chords[i-v-vii-iv (g#, d#, f#, c#)] in the middle section of Chopin's etude op. 10 no. 12. Coltrane developed this modified chord progression for "Countdown", which is much more complex. At its core, "Countdown" is a variation of "Tune Up", [ 13 ] but the harmonic substitutions occur rapidly and trick the listener into thinking that they are listening to a completely unrelated tune.

Improvisation is composing on the spot, when a singer or instrumentalist invents melodies and lines over a chord progression played by rhythm section instruments (piano, guitar ...
