Bigeminy is a cardiac arrhythmia in which there is a single ectopic beat, or irregular heartbeat, following each regular heartbeat. Most often this is due to ectopic beats occurring so frequently that there is one after each sinus beat , or normal heartbeat.
Sudden cardiac death is the cause of about half of deaths due to cardiovascular disease and about 15% of all deaths globally. [12] About 80% of sudden cardiac death is the result of ventricular arrhythmias. [12] Arrhythmias may occur at any age but are more common among older people. [4]
Its use is recommended in those who have a serious dysrhythmia, are in cardiac arrest, or have a potassium of greater than 5 mmol/L. [1] Low blood potassium or magnesium should also be corrected. [1] Toxicity may reoccur within a few days after treatment. [1] In Australia in 2012 there were about 140 documented cases. [1]

Premature ventricular contraction in an ECG (arrows) of a dog, caused by dilated cardiomyopathy. Premature ventricular contractions occur in healthy persons of any age, but are more prevalent in the elderly and in men. [3] In a very significant proportion of people they occur spontaneously with no known cause. [citation needed]
Ventricular remodeling may include ventricular hypertrophy, ventricular dilation, cardiomegaly, and other changes. It is an aspect of cardiomyopathy , of which there are many types. Concentric hypertrophy is due to pressure overload , while eccentric hypertrophy is due to volume overload .
