The Royal Spanish Football Federation created a new tier to begin in the 2021–22 season placed between the Segunda División and the former Segunda División B which had been created in 1977. [2] The federation officially named the third tier, containing two regionalised groups, the Primera Federación .
The 2021–22 Primera División RFEF season was the first and the only season under the name Primera División RFEF, the new third highest level in the Spanish football league system. It succeeded the old Segunda División B, which renamed itself Segunda División RFEF and downgraded to the fourth level in the pyramid. [ 1 ]
