Castle Rock is situated between the Cowlitz River and Interstate 5, one mile south of the confluence of the Cowlitz and the Toutle River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.76 square miles (4.56 km 2), of which, 1.59 square miles (4.12 km 2) is land and 0.17 square miles (0.44 km 2) is water. Caples is an unincorporated community in Cowlitz County, Washington. The Caples community is located 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of Woodland along Caples Road, on the east shore of Columbia River and across the river from Columbia City, Oregon. The Caples community is part of the Woodland School District, a K-12 school district of about 2,200 students.
