State Route 74 (SR 74), part of which forms the Palms to Pines Scenic Byway or Pines to Palms Highway, and the Ortega Highway, is a state highway in the U.S. state of California. It runs from Interstate 5 in San Juan Capistrano in Orange County to the city limits of Palm Desert in Riverside County.
The Ortega Highway crosses the creek twice in this section, and notably at the first bridge, the creek channel is narrowed from 500 feet (150 m) to 100 feet (30 m). An access road crosses San Juan Creek near where it meets Bell Canyon , and at this point, the creek is diverted into 36-inch (91 cm) culverts .
Access from Ortega Highway has been blocked with gates, but there is a 13-mile (21 km) round-trip hike from the park entrance that routes past the springs. [21] The gates are opened for rare naturalist-guided tours that are listed on the OCparks.com events calendar. [18] California sycamore that likely survived the 1993 wildfire
