Democrats 66 (Dutch: Democraten 66; [a] D66) is a social liberal [4] [5] and progressive [6] [7] political party in the Netherlands, which is positioned in the centre of the political spectrum. [ 2 ] [ 8 ] It is a member of the Liberal International (LI) and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).

Van Mierlo was selected as Leader and chairman of the Democrats 66 on 14 October 1966. For the 1967 general election Van Mierlo was the lead candidate and won seven seats in the House of Representatives, the first time the Democrats 66 won representation in the States General of the Netherlands.
Jan Maarten Paternotte (born 26 February 1984) is a Dutch politician of the Democrats 66 (D66). He has been a member of the House of Representatives since 23 March 2017, and he served as his party's parliamentary leader from January 2022 until December 2023. [2]
