The life zone concept was developed by C. Hart Merriam in 1889 as a means of describing areas with similar plant and animal communities. Merriam observed that the changes in these communities with an increase in latitude at a constant elevation are similar to the changes seen with an increase in elevation at a constant latitude.
The climate and ecology of different locations on the globe naturally separate into life zones, depending on elevation, latitude, and location. The generally strong dependency on elevation is known as altitudinal zonation: the average temperature of a location decreases as the elevation increases.
The region of overlap is called a vegetation tension zone. In traditional schemes, areas in phytogeography are classified hierarchically, according to the presence of endemic families, genera or species, e.g., in floral (or floristic , phytogeographic ) zones and regions , [ 1 ] or also in kingdoms , regions and provinces , [ 2 ] sometimes ...
Fig.8 shows an ecotone that could have been formed by an animal modifying its environment. There are several distinguishing features of an ecotone. First, an ecotone can have a sharp vegetation transition, with a distinct line between two communities. [4] For example, a change in colors of grasses or plant life can indicate an ecotone.
Grasslands and meadows are the predominant plant communities in this climate zone although agriculture has become a big part of the landscape. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] With meadow as the standard plant community for this climate zone, its importance to the local ecosystem and its resilience as a community is greatly strengthened.
Researchers at MIT have developed a new method for growing plant tissues in a lab -- sort of like how companies and researchers are approaching lab-grown meat. This work is still in its very early ...
A natural, excavated or elevated pond is a vivarium if it is sealed from other waterbodies and managed such as by filtration, aeration or additions of animals or plants. A water garden is an ornamental pond and its shore that features plants growing in and around the water, but may also house animals such as goldfish, turtles or mandarin ducks.
