Kamala Surayya (born Kamala; 31 March 1934 – 31 May 2009), popularly known by her one-time pen name Madhavikutty and married name Kamala Das, was an Indian poet in English as well as an author in Malayalam from Kerala, India.
His poems were translated to English, German, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi and Hindi languages. The English translation was by Mr Sachidananthan, Dr. K.M Shareef and Prof. Zahira Rahman and was published in Indian Literature, Poetry International web magazine and Malayalam Literary survey.
Uli Sandam is among the oldest works in Malayalam language. [1] It is a sandesa kavyam (message poem), a message written in poetry, on the lines of the famous Meghadūta of Kalidasa . In the case of this work, it is a message written by a lover to his lady-love staying at a far-off place.
It is also adapted into a movie in 1967. He is credited with bringing poetry to the masses with his simple romantic style. He died of tuberculosis aged 36.
