With nearly 300,000 people, it was the state's largest city, and it was the country's densest population with an average of 37,143 people per square mile. [4] The city had an art academy, art museum, Music Hall, opera house, Exposition Building, and a public library.
The fire museum is housed in the restored 1906 Court Street Firehouse at 315 West Court Street (near Plum Street in Downtown Cincinnati). [3] The firehouse was part of the Cincinnati Fire Department. The Court Street Firehouse is a registered historic building, listed in the National Register on July 18, 1974.
The historic West End was largely razed in the 1950s and 60s which led to a large drop in population from 67,520 in 1950 to 17,068 in 1970. This razing was done as part of a series of urban renewal projects and the construction of Interstate 75, its interchange with Interstate 71 and the construction of the 6th St Expressway for U.S. Route 50.
